About:
Annual Rugby Tournament
Since its inception in 1983,
the Cwmtawe 7's Rugby Tournament, run
on the first Saturday in August, has become
one of the most well known and well supported
events of its kind in the rugby calendar
in Wales and is officially approved by
the Welsh Rugby Union. It is set in a
picturesque valley with first class facilities
at St George's Playing Fields (formerly
Ynysderw Park), Pontardawe, Swansea, UK.
The Rugby Tournament depends heavily on
many individuals, organisations and businesses
whose support enables the tournament to
continue and prosper.
Amongst these are Neath Port Talbot County
Borough Council, the South Wales Constabulary
, the Tournament's Medical Officers, the
St John's Ambulance Service, many local
businesses who have helped in various
ways and of course those organisations
which have found it possible to provide
sponsorship.
More than twenty referees officiate at
the tournament and the organisers are
extremely grateful for their enthusiasm
and support over the years, particularly
with the advent of professional rugby.
The ongoing support of rugby clubs, both
old and new, is fundamental to the continuation
of the tournament and there are few competitions
which allow smaller clubs to pit their
skills against specialist seven-a-side
teams.
Thousands of rugby supporters and their
families regularly attend the tournament,
enjoying the friendly holiday atmosphere,
the excellent facilities and of course,
the high standard of rugby played.
The quality of the competing teams and
the number of spectators who attend the
Cwmtawe 7’s each year, help ensure
that this event maintains its position
as one of the largest and most prestigious
seven–a–side tournaments in
Wales.
The tournament organisers are of course
extremely gratified by the ongoing and
consistent support it receives from our
President Mr. J.P.R. Williams, ex international
referee Mr. Derek Bevan, and former W.R.U.
Chairman and Honarary treasurer Mr. Glanmor
Griffiths.
