David Strettle talks about Superstar 7's

David Strettle is a man with a mission. A simple mission: Quality rugby, quality location, quality weekend. And it looks like he is going to succeed in the form of the SuperStar 7's in La Manga on Spain's Costa Calida. The first annual Superstar 7’s Rugby and Netball tournament will be held over the weekend of 11th - 13th June.

BeerandRugby spoke to England and Harlequins winger and asked him about the reasoning behind the event and why he felt the urge to establish it now rather than waiting until his retirement and setting it up as an event where he could ‘re-live old times’

"With pro rugby you do have a lot of down time, and I’m not really into playing playstation and fancied doing something a little more constructive with my time!  I visited La Manga for the first time last June and was amazed by how good the facilities and golf were, and having toured the world off the back of rugby 7's I realised straight away that La Manga had everything needed to offer a great sporting weekend away"

and the Netball?

"Due to the fact La Manga can cater for so many other sports incorporating Netball seemed like a no brainer, as I’m sure the rugby lads will appreciate their presence!"

The event is open to all ages and abilities and David wanted to make sure the social side of the sevens game is not lost.

“I wanted to have a really social weekend, so aimed it at teams who don't mind having a few beers the night before a tournament, sometimes when you take things too seriously you forget about the aim of the weekend, to have fun!”

But having said that, there will be a few of his professional friends in and around at the weekend.

“The other great thing about La Manga is its home from home for a lot of the rugby lads who like playing a bit of golf in the off season, so its great to have a 7's tourney in a place which has a lot of the pro's knocking around anyway!”

If you think about the tournaments you have been to, while fun, they generally involve camping and a giant beer tent. David believes that the facilities and the set up and La Manga will set it apart from other tournaments.

“The luxury of La Manga is all the teams, rugby, vets and netball, will all be accommodated in the same place, luxury poolside apartments. this will mean that there will be a great buzz to not just the tournament but the whole weekend.  As everyone is on site then the evenings will include pool parties, England’s opening world cup game being shown on a big screen and lots more.

One of the other amazing things about La Manga is its home to 3 championship golf courses, so if your a Vet and fancy the Sunday playing golf or one of the rugby lads or girls then it adds another option which is pretty unique to the Superstar 7's”
